Jim Zucherman, MD
Dr. Jim Zucherman specializes in the surgical treatment
of degenerative conditions of the spine. He is board-certified
by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Dr. Zucherman
graduated with honors from the University of Southern California
in 1970. He received his Medical degree from the Baylor College
of Medicine, Houston, Texas in 1974. Following that he completed
his internship at Los Angeles County - USC General Hospital
in 1975 and a General Surgery residency at Mt. Zion Medical
Center in 1977. Subsequently, he completed his orthopaedic surgery
residency at the San
Francisco Orthopaedic Residency Program in 1981
and a pediatric/ orthopaedic spine surgery fellowship at the
Duchess of Kent Children's Orthopaedic Hospital of the University
of Hong Kong in 1982.
He joined San Francisco Orthopaedic Surgeons Medical
Group in 1983 and is one of the senior spine partners
in the group. He is a program co-director of the Stanford/ St.
Mary’s Hospital Combined Spine Surgery Fellowship Program and
has been one of the founding members of the St. Mary’s Spine
Center.
Dr. Jim Zucherman has pioneered numerous surgical techniques.
He developed and performed the first laparoscopic lumbar spinal
fusion and performed the first percutaneous cervical discectomy
in the United States. With his partners Dr. Hsu and White, he
performed the first pedicle screw instrumentation case West
of the Mississippi. He has been a Principle FDA investigator
for many lumbar and cervical new technology trials. He is currently
principle investigator for Prodisc, and Flexicore FDA lumbar
disk replacement trials, the minimally invasive X-Stop and Wallace
devices FDA trials, and Cervicore and Prestige cervical disc
replacement trials.
Dr. Zucherman is world-renowned as the inventor and co-developer
of the X-STOP, the interspinous process device that revolutionized
the surgical treatment of lumbar spinal stenosis and is the
only FDA-approved interspinous process device in the U.S. He
has authored numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals
and surgical textbooks and presented his research at the conferences
worldwide. He is currently developing the Staflex motion preservation
minimally invasive spine stabilization device through Spartek,
Inc.
Dr. Zucherman’s special interests include interspinous process
decompression, motion-preservation in the cervical/ lumbar spine
and total disk arthroplasty.
